In the summer of 2015, FCCMT presented its first collaborative, student-driven theater project. After nine years of putting on full-length musicals, 2015's production, Juego Malevolo (Wicked Game), was designed by young artists themselves, drawing from their own interests and focusing on themes that they find important in their lives. The cast picked out scenes and songs from well-known shows, stitching them together to create their own original work. Past shows challenged our students to examine issues prevalent in their lives and community, by pushing them to portray complex characters. Seymour Krelborn, Nina Rosario, Olive Ostrovosky, Bobby Strong - these characters were written to reflect the natural challenges of growing up, maintaining relationships, living in harsh environments, and finding personal identity. Juego Malevolo built on these themes, telling the story of a young girl lost in a video game who must rely on her ingenuity and skills to make it home. The experience of creating a show together pushed participants in new ways to be truly creative: taking risks, engaging the audience, telling stories, and expressing the joys and challenges of life. |
