In July 2024, Far Corners brought a burst of sunlight and song to the cloud forests of Monteverde with its most ambitious production yet: MAMMA MIA! The show transformed the Antigua Ferretería Rome — an old former hardware store in downtown Santa Elena — into a vibrant theatre venue, proving that great art can flourish anywhere with imagination, collaboration, and heart.
This production was more than a performance — it was a community endeavor. Over 100 local performers and collaborators, ranging in age from children to adults, came together to create a joyful and inclusive celebration of music, storytelling, and shared creativity. Far Corners’ model of community theatre — where local voices are centered and international artists partner as collaborators — shone through every song, dance, and scene. MAMMA MIA! captured the spirit of Monteverde in its mix of exuberance and reflection. From the infectious energy of “Dancing Queen” to the poignant stillness of “The Winner Takes It All,” the production invited audiences to laugh, sing, and remember their own stories of love, family, and identity. The performance resonated deeply because it wasn’t just about entertainment — it was about connection. Community members supported one another backstage and onstage, reflecting Far Corners’ belief that theatre builds bridges across generations, cultures, and life experiences. But MAMMA MIA! also represented resilience and creativity in action. When delays in the Monteverde Friends School’s electrical upgrades forced a change of venue, Far Corners and the Municipality of Monteverde rallied to secure the Rome space, demonstrating how community support can expand opportunities for cultural expression. The impact of this production extends far beyond the final curtain. Local youth gained confidence and skills through workshops and rehearsals, and audiences from across Monteverde and beyond witnessed the transformative power of participatory theatre. For many, it was their first experience with live performance, opening doors to new forms of self-expression and community connection. As the glow of the final bows and the echoes of ABBA’s songs lingered in the air, it became clear that Mamma Mia! wasn’t just a show — it was a moment of collective celebration, and a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together through the arts. |
