Into The Woods

Some stories are meant to be told, retold, and then unraveled entirely.
In its 11th year, Far Corners Community Musical Theatre brought Into the Woods (Dentro del Bosque) to Monteverde, Costa Rica — a production that didn’t just tell a story but questioned how stories are told. With a cast of 33, the performance wove together music, movement and meaning in a way that left a lasting impression. For over a decade, FCCMT has created a stage for young artists who might never have had a chance to step into the spotlight. This time, they stepped into something even trickier — Sondheim’s twisting melodies and Lapine’s layered storytelling, where fairy tale characters get what they want, only to ask: And then what? Cinderella finally reached the ball, but found herself trapped in uncertainty. Jack climbed the beanstalk and returned with riches, but at a price he never expected. Little Red set off with confidence, only to be reminded that the woods are not always safe. A Baker and his Wife wished for a child, but learned that wishes often lead to complications far beyond what they imagined. The first act gave them everything they wanted. The second forced them to ask: What happens after happily ever after? But Into the Woods was more than just a production—it was a challenge, an exploration, and a testament to the dedication of every performer, musician, and crew member who brought it to life. Sondheim’s music demanded precision, his lyrics required quick wit, and the story itself asked something deeper: What does it mean to want something? And what do we do when we get it? For weeks, the cast and crew immersed themselves in this world of tangled paths and unexpected turns, working tirelessly to create something that would stay with them long after the final bow. The stage lights have dimmed, the costumes have been packed away, but the lessons, friendships, and moments of magic will linger—like an echo in the woods, waiting for the next traveler to find them.
