We need energetic, creative individuals to assist with Musical Theatre Connections, an intensive summer theatre program for teens.  Join us in a breathtakingly beautiful environment as we put on a full production of a musical with a fantastic, diverse group of youth.

Positions Available:

Each intern is expected to take on TWO positions: one from LIST A and one from LIST B below.

LIST A - Primary Position (approximately 70% of your work)
Music Director
Stage Manager
Tech Director
Assistant Producer

LIST B - Secondary Position (approximately 30% of your work)
Line Coach
Orchestra Manager
Production Assistant
Props/Puppet

Our staff is a flexible, multidisciplinary team.  Interns will be accepted into the program with a specific position, but should expect to take on a variety of responsibilities outside of the traditional tasks association with that position.  We expect you to be forthcoming about your strengths as well as willing to help in areas with which you are less familiar.

These are intense, full-time positions.  Interns work 8 - 12 hours per day and have one day off per week.

Required Qualifications:

• At least 18 years of age
• Completion of at least 1 year of college/university study (or 1 year of full-time employment following high school graduation)
  
• Passion for musical theatre and working with children/youth
• Experience working with children/youth
• Interest in and open mind towards immersion in a new culture
• Flexibility, patience and maturity
• Leadership experience
  
• Proficiency in your area of expertise
  
• Commitment to abide by our drug/alcohol policy
• Willingness to learn some Spanish (Spanish proficiency is valued but not required)

Deadline: We will consider internship applications on a rolling basis.  Thus, we encourage you to submit your application early in order to secure your preferred position.  However, we will continue to accept qualified interns up until two weeks before the start dates.

Cost of Participation & Financial Aid:
Our program has an extremely limited budget, and we ask our interns to contribute the cost of their participation so that we have the maximum funding available for the youth we serve.  We do offer need-based financial aid to interns as much as we are able.

The internship fee of $1700 includes:

• Room & board (3 meals per day) with a Costa Rican host family
• Weekly laundry with host family
• Work-related transportation within Costa Rica
• Some tours and activities with participants
• Training and supervision
  

 
The fee does NOT include airfare.  Round-trip airfare to San José, Costa Rica typically costs between $400 and $600 from major U.S. airports.

Limited financial aid may be available to qualified individuals.  We strongly believe in making all of our opportunities available to everyone regardless of ability to pay.  Please indicate on your application if you will require financial aid in order to participate.

Our funding is highly dependent on the enrollment of international teen participants.  Thus, we offer a recruitment bonus to interns which can help to cover the cost of participation.

Additional Opportunities for Interns

• Spanish Language Study: There is an excellent Spanish-language school in Monteverde offering small-group (one to four students) conversational Spanish classes at levels with Costa Rican teachers.  For 8-week interns, we can arrange for you to take a one-week intensive class (4 hours per day) at an approximate cost of $250.  If you are doing the 5-week internship, or if you would like to take additional weeks of class, you can do so before or after the internship dates.  The school also offers university credit, or you may be able to obtain credit through your university.
  
• College Credit: Your university may offer you course credit for your internship with Far Corners Community Musical Theatre.  We are happy to assist you with necessary documentation – please inform us as soon as possible about the requirements.
• Travel: Costa Rica is a beautiful, interesting, and inexpensive travel destination frequented by young backpackers from around the world.  While you will NOT have time to travel during your internship, we encourage you to travel before or after the program if you are interested.  It is easy to travel from Costa Rica by bus to other parts of Central America.  We are happy to provide you with tips and “insider” information as you make your plans.
  

Extended Internship Program

Community Outreach Intern, Costa Rica

Period of internship:            
This is a one-year commitment, including:

·       4 – 6 months full-time in Costa Rica
*Exact start and finish dates in Costa Rica are flexible – however, the intern must be able to arrive in Costa Rica by mid-April and stay until mid- to late- August.
            PLUS
·       6 – 8 months part-time (2 – 8 hours per week), “cyber-commute”
Start training January, 2012.  End of internship December 31, 2012

Minimum qualifications:           

• At least 1 year of university study in a bachelor’s degree program with a major in Spanish, theatre, dance, music, education, or other related field
• Written and verbal proficiency in both Spanish and English
• Excellent communication skills (spoken & written)
• At least two years experience working with children/youth, including experience with elementary-school-aged children (5 – 12) and with teenagers.
• High level of flexibility, patience, initiative, personal responsibility, honesty, cultural sensitivity, compassion
• Significant experience in and ability to teach one or more performing arts disciplines
• Ability to work independently
• A sense of adventure
• Strong desire to experience a new culture, become part of a new community, and make a difference

Primary Responsibilities:

Before traveling to Costa Rica:

• Assist in planning for Musical Theatre Connections: Costa Rica 2012  program
• Plan curriculum for outreach classes in your area of expertise
• Through web & library research create or develop arts education resources to bring with you to Costa Rica
• Assist in promoting MTC Costa Rica 2012 to high school students in your local area

On-site in Costa Rica:

• Lay the groundwork for MTC Costa Rica 2012, which begins at the end of June.  Visit schools & recruit students.  Distribute information & publicize through a variety of media in the community.  Secure venue & rehearsal space.  Meet with school administrators, teachers, and other key community members.
• Organize, plan and teach weekly theatre/dance/music classes at a number of different local schools and/or community centers.
• Write regular blog postings about the program and your experiences in Costa Rica
• Attend cultural activities in town

After returning from Costa Rica:

• Assist in the evaluation & documentation of the MTC: Costa Rica 2012
• Assist with the planning & preparations for MTC: Costa Rica 2013
• Organize an outreach event or program in your home or university community

 
Housing:

The intern will be housed with a Costa Rican host family for a minimum of three months.  The home-stay cost is approximately $450 per month including room, board, and laundry.  After 3 months, the intern may choose to continue to live with his/her host family or to move to an apartment or house.


Funding:

This is an unpaid internship.

We are a small organization with a limited budget run by a volunteer staff.  So that we can maximize the resources available to provide program opportunities in the community, we ask our interns to cover their own costs (including housing & airfare) if at all possible.

However, as with all of our programs, we do not wish to turn away passionate and qualified individuals due to their families’ financial circumstances.  Please specify in your application whether you will be able to cover your own costs, or, if not, how much financial assistance you require.

 
University Credit:
  
While in Costa Rica, it is possible to obtain college credit for Spanish language courses taken at CPI, a language school with a branch in Monteverde, the town where we work.
   
If your university may offer credit (possibly under education, performing arts, or general elective) for your internship work, we would be happy to assist with this process.
